Charlie and I actually stayed up into the wee hours of the morn reading this one together last night. My eBook cherry was popped on Permafrost by Sally Malcolm.

The first few pages were devoured on Christmas day by the pool, but as the holidays go, chaos ensued and yesterday was my first actual day off, in which I had time to sit down and read.

I loved the premise of SG-1 heading off on an adventure Earth-side and together for the holidays. Set in season two, the team are still getting to understand each other’s pasts and the reader gets little glimpses into why Christmas is seen by each member as something to be ignored or treated with a sense of apathy, and yet…

The team dynamics were wonderful, I felt that everyone in the team was very in character and all knew their job, and I was delighted that they were there for Daniel in the face of ignorance regarding his career from the other archaeologists. It was a nice balance that showed the closeness of the team at this time.

The thing that really excites me about the Fandy novels is the amount of action and duration in which it can play out not being limited by the restraints of television. And who doesn’t love a good whumping?

However, there were a few little inconsistencies with regard to SG-1’s knowledge of the Asgard at the time in which the novel is set – prior to ‘The Tok’ra’. Up until this point in the series, SG-1 had made two trips to Cimmeria in which they had encountered the hologram technology, Thor’s hall of might, and seen an Asgard ship from afar. How then was Sam able to liken the Asgard text in the long barrow to that on an Asgard ship when she had never been aboard one? Daniel also appeared to be able to translate the Asgard text with surprising ease given his limited encounters with the language. Was he using Heliopolis as a reference?

Aside from discrepancies in canon, there were a few typos and ill-structured sentences that didn’t make sense, but it was easy enough to work out what was being said.

Likes:
* Teamy goodness.
* Tying the character’s back stories into the narrative and using them as motivations for their adventure.
* The reanimation virus – could it have links with Telchak?
* The escapades of patient Jack, and Fraiser’s indifference to his state of undress – she is a strong woman! *g*
* The end. <3

Dislikes:
* The shippy nods. I felt these were over the top for season two especially, shades of jealousy when Munroe befriends Sam, and the beautiful sunset = beautiful woman thing made me groan, hehe!
* The sentence structure of describing things in threes. It felt like there should have been a few words in-between to make it read a lot easier. The flow was disrupted, and my mind kept filling in the missing words, jolting me from the story.

It turns out reading about snowy Iceland is a nice way to forget you’re sweltering in the 29 degree heat of the sub-tropics at 2am.

Can zombies swim?

That's the thing with Sally Malcolm; she can't leave her shippy proclivities at the door. That's what I'm struggling with in Hostile Ground. Well, one of the things. It's a shame. Fandy needs to know that not everyone appreciates those little "moments," especially when they add zilch to the actual story. Oh, and typos are driving me nuts. And the odd Britishism, and a few examples of poor sentence structure.

In other news: I've never actually seen zombies at my local pool having swimming lessons. I'm not sure if that signifies anything ... ;-)

Sadly if you look at Twitter, the die-hard Shippers lead by Majorsal seem to be constantly tweeting and chatting with Malcolm...they are most definitely in a clique there and I'm sure influencing her more than likely to try and creep more shippy stuff in if she can get away with it...

Sorry I'm done with Fandy....the books I have got are gathering dust now - except Barque of Heaven which I might re-read and I haven't bothered to spend any money on downloads...

I hate Zombies too so if they truly are in there I won't read it anyway......
